Investing in any new activity can feel daunting but the simple answer to this question is ‘do you want your brand awareness to grow?’. If the answer is yes, then PR is one of the most cost effective ways of doing this.

Great question, you could try and work with media yourselves but each market is very different, what works in the US likely won’t work in the UK. The strength of a PR specialist is in their media relationships and in-depth knowledge of what works in the market so they can achieve results in a cost-effective way.

This is different for every client but success can look like column inches, increased backlinks to a website, securing first hand experiential opportunities with key media or the facilitation of an event or showcase. Many elements of PR come at no additional cost to you - outside of the PR retainer - so success is achievable at many different levels.

Another great question! Large PR agencies can support your account with a team of different people, and you might find the kudos of being represented by a large agency appealing. The downside is you’re paying for all those overheads and you have no control over who is in your account team, or whether they’re particularly passionate about your brand. The senior team you’re impressed by in an initial pitch meeting might not be the people you work with day-to-day, and large agencies typically experience high staff turnover and so clients can expect to work with different people frequently.
With a smaller agency or freelance consultant, all the money you pay goes directly on that person’s time. You’re choosing your specialist carefully and you know that every hour spent on your account - whether planning, pitching, hosting or reporting - is getting that person’s expertise and years of experience put behind it.

In-house PR is a fantastic investment and if you have the budget for a new full time member of staff this could definitely be the way to go. The majority of my experience has been in-house, including 10 years at P&O Cruises and 7 at Attraction Tickets Ltd. All the best PR’s should have experience working In-house and agency side as it gives invaluable experience of both being the client and working for the client. The benefit of a good freelance PR consultant is they have experience on both sides, are specialists in the market you’re looking to grow in, and can open doors for your brand by being represented alongside other major travel and lifestyle brands.
